The biracial young Declan Jones was concieved by teenagers Derrick and Bella the night of their supposed prom. Both of them were deeply in love for years. They both elected to skip prom (despite being nominated king and queen) and consummate their love on a beautiful moonlight night at Cullen Lake. A few weeks following this, Derrick’s life would be taken when he sacrificed himself to get in the way of a school shooter who had invaded the campus. Derrick fought hand to hand against the shooter and gave the other students a chance to evacuate until the police arrived.
Alone with the prospect of having a child, Bella was conflicted between what she felt and what she should do. Her mother had caught her with a pregnancy test in her room while trying to console her. Bella was surprised when Rebecca gave Bella her full support, and that Derrick’s baby was a blessing. A few months later, the night before Nicole’s 8th birthday, Bella drove with Rebecca for some last minute party-shopping. She confided in her mother that she was ready and not afraid to be a mother. Unfortunately, fate struck a tragic blow, a fuel tanker sideswiped Rebecca’s car and caused a terrible explosion.
Bella was blown through the windshield and hit the ground far from the reach of the explosion, destroying her left eyeball and burning her badly. EMTs rushed her to AbGen and admitted the now-comatose Bella into the burn ward, with Robert being told of the whole thing by his partner Dennis Briscoe.
As all this was going on, on the star Polaris, Rebecca’s spirit was beamed from her body the instant before the explosion thanks in part to her grandfather and his brother, Chief Blizzard Storm and Prince Silvadarten Sol. Derrick was thankful both that Bella was still alive and that Rebecca was spared death. He asked for an audience with her grandmother Queen Aurora in the Neverscape regarding the still-pregnant Bella. Before the Queen and the entirety of the active members of the Brotherhood of Pan and Sorority of Bells, Derrick pleaded with the magical entities to transplant the embryo of their son to a special crystalline chamber where he could keep watch over him.
Most of this was lost on the Brotherhood, as they were unfamiliar with sexual reproduction (Hey, they’re Peter Pans after all) but based on his sincerity and love for Bella, they agreed and gave the final vote to Queen Aurora. Aurora agreed and appointed Bella’s slvskorte Misty, to act as liason between Polaris and the Neverscape regarding her little brother. Derrick became the guardian of his child, asking that the stipulation of Bella’s memories of both him and her being pregnant be dulled and hidden in her psychic vaults. The deal was made and Bella and Ariella (now comatose) were taken to the Neverscape both for the harvesting procedure, and for their convalescence, freeing up needed space at AbGen.
