A HEART-WARMING TAIL: On frosty nights, Juniper was one of many eager furries to give Petalia the warmth she needed by wrapping Petalia up in her vest and tail, at least until Celia’s special project for Petalia was complete. Petalia adored Juniper for more than this, but it was not lost upon her how much of a gesture of kindness this truly was. Juniper’s favorite pastime was puzzle books, and Petalia’s antennae, inadvertently, always provided light for her, and the others. Also, akin to Magnolia’s powers, Petalia subliminally showed her love for Juniper with images from said antennae. On this particular night, when Wil forgot to bring a quill, Magnolia eagerly gave one of her own while Tetrazin Fayported a nice, fat acorn that she had come across in Hopper Hills. These are the kind of nights that Juniper lives for. It not only fulfills her as a friend, but also allows her to live out a desire she has long-held: to cradle her own Magtis in this way, who lives in a very well-maintained climate-controlled environment in the Nevertribe village.

Personality & Physical Traits

Juniper is a svelte and slender, curvy, brown, and fluffy squirrel who possesses membranes between her arms that allow her to fly on currents of wind, a last-resort if she ever runs out of pixie dust from the Nevertribe Lords. Hardly ever seen without her aviator’s helmet, Juniper is a proud and patriotic critter who fights to keep her Neverzone safe from invaders and marauders by putting her nimbleness and acrobatic skills to good use. A toughie and a tomboy a lot of the time, Juniper’s heart does, however, house a completely different side of her. While it is more common than others believe, Juniper was never destined to fall in love with any of her kind; her soul was drawn to the simple-natured and very compassionate Wilscott, a blue Neverscapian Caribou male.
Autonomy and Independence

Juniper is of a species that is considered to be a sex-symbol in Neverscapian culture, and will often face unwanted attention from others, including the incident at the Academy in the co-ed locker room; but thankfully, Commander Starblaze Jones had the individual expelled from the service and reprimanded by Queen Aurora personally. In her comfort zone, Juniper tends to be quite energetic and very, very frisky when she is happy, and, conversely, struggles to fly when she is sad or angry. Her impulses are easy to contain, as it was part of her FaeForces training, but the night she first met Wilscott, she willingly tossed away her inhibitions. Even when this happens, Juniper will find ways to overcome these barriers, as she loves to fly more than almost anything. At one with nature, Juniper adores the Neverzone she resides in, often using her days off from active duty to just walk around on the ground with Wil. On those days, she brings out her more impish side by disrobing of everything but her aviator glasses and combinoft ring, enjoying the freedom that comes from being a nudist (no one else had the heart to tell her that she was the one who saw it as that). Her body is source of great pride for her, so she is careful about what she eats, but does not deny herself on special occasions. Her figure comes from her wanting to be nimble and light when she flies, her expectations about appearance does not take part. Wilscott is built differently than her, and holds him to a different standard, one that always sees him in her best light, the same way she is with all of her friends.
Relationship with her Combinoft:
As ambitious as Juniper was in having a career in the FaeForces, she was still alone even with her friendships with Cello, Dainty, Celia, and Demuria. Having lost her mentors to a viscous covey of murderous creatures, she suppressed her yearnings for love, for fear of it being snatched away from her. She lost her mother and father when she was very young and hid behind a facade of indifference before she ever made her first friends. This would be the catalyst for what happened when she nearly lost her own life during maneuvers during a tropical storm. When she woke up in Wilscott’s cave, she thought that she was dead at first, but the taste of the berry-based vitamin paste was the key that unlocked her barricaded heart. In that instant, she knew that she was with the man of her dreams, and they had connected on such a deep level without so much as a word being spoken aloud.

Wilscott had no explanation for his deep affection for a girl who did not even know he existed, and for the longest time it seemed like he was just chasing shadows, but the very moment that Juniper woke up, he felt a warmth from her, more than just gratitude for his heroic gesture; she was opening herself up to him, both of them being empathic creatures, they were more than capable of coming to this conclusion on their own. That’s how they began.

The couple is very open about their intimacy with each other, and always miss each other when the other is away. Wil is considerably older than Juniper in age, but they have no trouble translating their chemistry and sexual attraction into love; they are able to perfectly co—mingle the two in just the right way. A romantic dinner, bath-time, watching Rocky & Bullwinkle on video orbs; or cozying up together in bed, their being contrasting species only makes their union that much more exciting and irresistible. Making love is magical for them, but it is far from the only thing that keeps their relationship alive. Juniper’s work with the Nevertribe and the FaeForces is how the couple earns a living while Wilscott tends to their house; they have all they need, with the exception of their Magtis daughter Viviana living under their roof. While arguments and fights are lines they dread crossing, there will be the occasional near-misses, but they are quick to forgive and to express their apologies. They are a squirrel and a caribou; two totally different creatures; yet, they are the epitome of a loving couple.
Other Relationships

Viviana Violet: From first sight, Juniper fell madly in love with this special flower. It was not common practice for animialistic Neverbeings to need or pick out a Magtis, but Lady Sal was only too happy to fulfill Juniper’s special request, as she had taken a strong shine to Viviana. The entire week that she was kept in the biodome brook for decontamination, Juniper made it a week of girl-time, staying apart from Wilscott so that their special day would be all the more special. It was fraught with agony for Juniper in ways she could not have foreseen; she felt she would die without her beloved Wil, but Viviana did everything she could to comfort her Combinoft mother; card games, stargazing, drawing in the dirt, and trivia; whatever they could think of. The day of the Ritual, Juniper held her Combinoft bouquet betwixt her tail as if it was made of fae electrum bullion; the most valuable thing in the universe to her and Wilscott. After their combination, Juniper realized that their cave dwelling was no place for such a vivacious and vivid violet to live. Lady Sal asked the three of them if they would be happy with Viviana being cared for by her little brother, Chief Sol. Each of them agreed, and Juniper has kept her promise to visit Viviana every day before and after her patrols, and has flourished and prospered from her combinoft mother and father’s love.

Fyrefox and Snow Tiger: One of their best protégés, Fyrefox adored having her as a student, even if the subjects she wanted to learn were hard for her to teach in her current non-pixian form. Even so, Juniper surpassed all of Fyrefox’s expectations, and then some. On her final day of class, with Petalia in her leaves, Fyrefox and Snow Tiger observed her prized pupil help their avian daughter attempt her first flight. While Magnolia was terrified, Juniper told her that she would never let anything happen to her. The real test was not the complexity of the maneuvers, but the way Juniper sacrificed her performance for Magnolia’s safety. It was with great pride that Celia gave Snow Tiger Juniper’s graduation present: her first aviators helmet.

Magnolia “M.O.G.” the Snow Owl: As one of her mothers’ best students, and the one who first taught Magnolia how to fly, Juniper took a special loving to the meek and gentle owlette. In all the years that followed the demise of Snow Tiger and Fyrefox, Juniper kept her vow to watch over their daughters, and always made it a point to be there for her, no matter what. In turn, Juniper holds a special place in Magnolia’s heart, forever clinging to the image of their first flight together. In all of Juniper’s travels through the Great Myriad, she has tussled and fought with many fierce and mindless birds of prey, who only saw her as food or sport. While Juniper does not make her presence known to flocks in the Petaliaverse Neverzone, she is very close with Magnolia; closer than anyone would ever imagine. Like Petalia, Magnolia has had to face stigma for being different from others, and Juniper is one of the few beings that can read Magnolia’s face without relying on M.O.G.’s emojis. There is nothing but love and iron-clad trust between these two flyers. Magnolia not only respects Juniper, but reveres her as a mother figure.
Petalia: For the lovely and alluring Neverbloom, Juniper is a mother-hen of sorts, but not as involved as Cello and Laddie are. Juniper’s adoration for the shy seedling began when she was one of Fyrefox’s students. The proud mother always had Petalia’s seed in her leaves at all times; rocking her to sleep, singing to her, and loving her; it was only natural that Juniper would be smitten with the pink-lidded flower seed. When Juniper had gotten word from her friends, Cello and Laddie, that Petalia was still alive after Fyrefox and her combinoft vanished, Juniper and Wilscott were so thankful, they vowed that whatever Petalia needed, they would help provide. Over the years, Petalia grew closer and closer to the flying ace squirrel, seeing her as an aunt in some ways. This was never more evident than when Petalia was shielded from the cold by being cocooned in Juniper’s long, luxurious tail.

Sally Sloth: A fellow furry female who idolizes Juniper for her speed and stealth. Sally has trained, for years, to be faster than her brethren, but still feels as weighty as lead. While Juniper never minds showing off for Sally, she fears that she is giving the sloth youth false hopes that she can be as fast as her. Sally had tried magic potions and herbal regimens to increase her energy and stamina, but still was only 25 percent faster than she used to be, at maximum. While Sally feels that she does not have as much to offer as Juniper does, Juniper sees how protective Sally is of smaller Neverbeings, like Gina the Gerbil and others. As of late, Juniper has embargoed herself from flying in Sally’s presence unless it is absolutely necessary; not because she feels like Sally cannot handle it, but to help Sally feel equal and included. Nevertheless, Sally turned to human-made modes of transportation that the PX began to carry: skateboards, scooters, and even old-time bikes (don’t ask). The young sloth chose the more elegant approach, roller skates. Needless to say, it was a rough start at first, but nothing that Sally wouldn’t look adorable doing. Sally and her little sister Sasha welcome every chance they have to bond with Juniper, her sister Bluesy, and Wilscott, and often hang out in the woods outside of the K’wiik, the Nevertribe Marketplace.

Dainty and Ross: Like most of the denizens of this particular Neverzone, Juniper had despised the Rattler population, and Ross was no exception. As a fellow rodent, Juniper and Dainty grew up together and had been besties for the longest time. Dainty’s infatuation with a guy she had met had made Juniper insanely happy for Dainty, but practically created fire trails with her feet by how quickly her opinion changed when she heard the name of the guy: Ross the Rattler. This was not long after Demuria had given Ross her stamp of approval for him dating her sister; but Juniper was not as content with the circumstance as the ebon mouse she was also friends with. Her opinion would later change again, but it forever stayed positive. After taking a wrong turn during a nature hike, Wilscott had fallen off of the path and into a ditch. Juniper had tried to find help, but was bitten by another snake who tried to mug them. Wilscott impaled the crook with his antlers, but Juniper was in the throes of the poison. Juniper woke up a few hours later in Lady Sal’s biodome, under the watchful eyes of both Dainty and Ross. Instinctively, Ross was ready to be slashed at by Juniper, but the latter’s powers of empathy were able to read Ross as clearly as she could Dainty and Wil. Ross had saved Juniper’s life by sucking out the poison and helping to keep her elevated while Dainty called for help, and then helping Lady Sal synthesize an antidote using the deceased mugger’s venom.

The Hoppers and Celia: Cello was a fellow student of Fyrefox’s, alongside Juniper and a few others. Juniper was a bubbly and popular student, but only feigned to be excited about it. Most of their schoolmates were snide and two-faced, but Cello could always sense who was genuine to her. Juniper had happened to overhear Cello rehearsing for a recital after school had dismissed, and was so entranced by it, she had to see who was playing it. Expecting to find miniature string instruments, Juniper was shocked to see that a grasshopper could make such complex notes and arpeggios with just her two legs. Cello also found herself entranced by the aura that Juniper possessed, one that was quite disarming. Cello took the gamble and asked if Juniper would want to be her friend, and then found herself having Juniper over for dinner with her family. Arthur was not born yet, so it was just Cello and Stratocaster and their folks. The night hit a snag when Juniper met Cello’s mother, a black widow spider, and saw Juniper immediately terrified. Rather than stay and risk further hurting Cello’s family’s feelings, Juniper showed herself out. In the meadow outside of Hopper Hills, Juniper looked down at her reflection in a shallow pond, seeing only a coward and a fink staring back at her. Wishing that she could make things right, fortune happened to shine upon Juniper when a bespectacled Celia came up from behind and covered Juniper’s eyes with a silk mask and introducing herself as a spider, promising she was keeping her distance and wouldn’t hurt the cute squirrel.

Juniper was still terrified, but a dialogue was opened with Celia. Without seeing who she was speaking with, Juniper became more comfortable and confident as she and Celia talked about anything and everything they could think of. Celia had admitted that she was used to being seen as abhorrent and ugly, and that Juniper should not feel so guilty. Juniper could hear the sadness in Celia’s voice, and decided that enough was enough. She ripped the silk from around her face and looked directly at Celia. It had worked; Juniper had gotten to know Celia enough that she did not see her spider features as terrifying anymore. More to the point, she practically fell in love with Cello’s big cousin, she was so overcome by her beauty. After Celia accompanied Juniper back to her Aunt Churro’s house, Juniper begged Cello and her brother for their forgiveness for her behavior towards their mother. Churro, however, had heard everything via Psicon, and had given Celia the idea to try that method with Juniper. Not only was the squirrel girl forgiven, but Cello had given her oath of friendship to Juniper in the form of a hug. Even to this day, Cello feels a special bond to Juniper, even if they are no longer living in the same Neverzone. (NOTE: Emotions affect the shapeshifting cells of Neverbeings, shrinking or growing them in size depending on the circumstances)

Tetrazin: As the slvskorte daughter of one of the Nevertribe’s most regal figures, Tetra was well-acquainted with the aerial aces that served under her uncles’ command, and that was before discovering that one of them was her sister v’combin’s best friends. Cello was always close with her brother’s combinoft, and Tetra saw Cello as a reliable judge of character. Put simply, any friend of Cello’s was a friend of Tetra’s. Juniper had known many slvskorte fae from her training with Major Cloudwind Calicos, a pixian fae who was her chief flight class instructor; but had seldom gotten to know any of them. Juniper’s reverence of Tetra’s beauty as a pixian fae was just the first element of their friendship; Tetra was able to give Juniper a run for her money as a fellow flyer. Another shared trait was how Tetra and Strat were fans of Earthen popular culture, and when Juniper saw one of the pins that Strat had made, she wondered who the character was. Strat had always found it fascinating that Juniper would choose Wilscott as her combinoft, because it ran in parallel almost completely with a cartoon show that the duo would watch via the ethereal plane: Rocky and Bullwinkle. It was because of the Hopper couple that Juniper and Wilscott became fans of it themselves; even noting how similar their names were to the voice actors. Prince Silver Dart has yet to find a way of explaining away this as a coincidence, believing it to be the will of fate.

Saturnring Anderson: During her time in the FaeForces academy, Juniper had spent plenty of time in the Neverscape libarary in the palace, where Sattie, (AKA Sci-Fae) worked. Sattie reminded the outgoing squirrel of her dear friend Celia, and grew rather attached to the shy librarian, who entrusted her with her secret: that she was the brain behind the Legendary Neverscape ComicCon. Sometime after Mina and Spencer’s Combinoft Ritual, Sattie had been given the green light by Queen Aurora to reach out to ToxAnon and sponsor a booth for them at the Neverscape ComicCon. Juniper and Wil had volunteered to be Winona Wasp’s chaperone for the convention, but once they heard about the other components of the vast convention, they were too excited to sit still. Not forgetting the loving friendship that Juniper had struck with her all those Nevercycles ago, Saturnring made them V.I.Ps and promised to keep Winona company. Because of her fondness for the couple and their Magtis daughter, Saturnring personally paid for all the accommodations to allow Vivianna to join, who incidentally found she had a fondness for Quisp Cereal.
Gardenia Gladdie: As previously stated, Juniper tended to be friends with most Neverbeings, but was rather selective when it came to Lady Sal’s Gladdie children. Sal had a close bond with Gertrude Gladdie, because she was Sal and Galatea’s Magtis, centuries ago. Of Gertrude’s daughters, Guitara, Gigglie, and Grassroot were the ones she got along with; but was best friends with their eldest sister Gardenia. Juniper was always charmed by Gardenia’s smile, scent, and kindness; whereas Gardenia was always fascinated by Juniper’s aeronautics and style. Lady Sal and Gertrude would permit Gardenia to have special time with her squirrel pal while the former stayed in the biodome with safeguards in place. This friendship began during the time that Juniper and Cello were in school together; so one of the dreams that Juniper shared with Gardenia was that she wanted to join the FaeForces, having to intern with the Nevertribe’s Sky Patrol first; and Gardenia always wanted to be a breeder flower, just like her mother. Juniper had never realized that Gertrude had had more than the number of children that had been living in the garden at that time. When asked how Gardenia would be able to part with her bulbie daughters like that, Gardenia replied, “I wouldn’t, were it not for the lifetime of happiness that a magtis and their family creates for one another.” Juniper vowed, then and there, that if the opportunity to join the FaeForces ever came up, she would flat-out refuse. She wanted to be there for Gardenia, so that she would be able to count on at least one friend who would never leave her; but never said this to Gardenia out loud — little realizing that Gardenia’s empathy was on par with even the Nevertribe, and it moved her to tears to feel this come from her fuzzy friend.

ToxAnon: She is not very involved with the group, itself, but Juniper has spent far too much time with Ross, Churro, and Celia to ever be terrified of these youngsters. The only exception was Boris the Slow Loris, who was considerably older than the others, and made a nuisance of himself during his brief infatuation with the flying squirrel. Juniper was a volunteer whenever she had the opportunity, and mentored the younglings who could fly: Conroy the Bat, Scarlett the Warbler, and Winona Wasp. She would plan out field trips, help with fundraisers, and even would help pick up deliveries of Oz’s Sarsatonic from the Petraverse Neverzone. She would call the youngsters of the group her lovely little “small fries”, affectionately acting like a big sister to the group. After Petalia was relocated to the Petraverse, Juniper was given a permanent post as a coordinator for the group, at large; a role which she gladly accepted and cherished, as her duty to serve was what drove her in life.

Lady Sal and Lady Galatea: Juniper has very few human friends who can understand her, but the two Combinoft women of the Nevertribe are worth their weight in fae platinum as far as Juniper is concerned. Sal was a fellow mourner of Fyrefox’s and Snow Tiger’s (the latter being her niece), and grieving together, the three ladies were able to heal their own wounds, and ventured to help those in mourning who also loved Fyre and Snow; which would not completely heal over time, sadly. It would be years before Sal and Galatea would discover a secret that Juniper agonized over; she had found where Fyrefox was laid to rest, and that it was not far from where Fyrefox’s daughters were. The only thing that stood in between them and learning of their departed mother’s fate was with Bramber the Behomoth, whose bombastic tendencies were a front, even to himself, as a way of protecting everyone from learning this. After Petalia and Magnolia were taken in by the Elechads, Juniper was relieved to learn that she no longer was beholden to this secret. When asked by Galatea why she felt she needed to carry such a burden, Juniper was want of a response, she only saw how Galatea had lost her own family and her left arm in a catastrophe, and felt that it was too much for anyone to handle. In 20XX+3, Juniper would finally get the chance to meet the vessel of Fyrefox’s spirit, Ariella Jones, and agreed with her aunts that Juniper’s decision may have been misguided, but was done out of love, and that it was neither a right or wrong call. Galatea was partial to squirrels, even after her body was metamorphosed into a more feline form, and was always happy when both couples could have a picnic in the Neverwoods, together. Juniper often acts as a gofer for Lady Sal whenever she has fallen ill or is in need of extra help, never hesitating to aid her and her plant children when the call of duty would sound. One thing that piques her interests is that while their soul prints are similar to her brothers, Lady Sal’s energy signature is not native to their Neverzone.

Bramber: It might surprise most people to learn this, but out of all the Neverbeings in the Petaliaverse Neverzone, Bramber was not an enemy of Juniper’s. Far from it. Even if she could not discern what Bramber’s emotions hid from the world, her other instincts told her more. His behavior was far too erratic to be classified as a menace or a bully; he carried his own pain, and it centered around Petalia. Wilscott was the only other who believed that there was more to the brute than met the eye, From the time Juniper and Wil became friends with Bramber until the present, Bramber’s mind was oppressed from undetermined events of his past; events that he was devastated by. As a result of the trauma finally taking its toll, Bramber’s mind had split into two separate personalities, with the brutish Bramber being the secondary persona, while the secretive dominant personality came out whenever Juniper was around, never realizing what his other self had done. Whether he realizes it or not, his life is hazy and he does not know how lost he is in it, but Juniper and Wil are the lantern lighters.

Demuria the Mousette: Sworn to secrecy about Demuria’s life outside of her role as a sub-gardener for Lady Sal, distant cousin Juniper is one of the few of Demuria’s friends who knew about her secret romance with fellow ZSF Agent Baxter Bee and the children they had. Up until that point, the mystery of her long-lost baby sister Ferrina, and the night that Fyrefox and Snow Tiger perished, she had Baxter to share the burden with; but now she was all alone in one facet of her life; but not in the other crucial parts: her friends. After Demuria was honorably discharged from the Service, Demuria sought comfort from her favorite flying squirrel, not even telling little sister Dainty the truth. Juniper believes that what Demuria did for her children was necessary for their safety, even knowing how painful it must be for the ebon mouse. In the Neverdecades to follow, Juniper and Demuria were stereotypical gal pals, playing mahjongg, going to merchant bazaars in other Neverzones, and attending concerts featuring their mutual friend Cello. For all the regrets that Demuria has had in her life, Juniper has never let her forget how wonderful she is, and defies anyone on the island to find anyone that disagrees.
Trivia and Allusions

The concept of Juniper and Wilscott as a couple comes directly from my favorite television show of all time, Rocky and Bullwinkle. The names of the two combinofts are taken directly from the voice actors of the show, Bill Scott and June Foray. As derivative as it sounds, Juniper and Wilscott are meant as a parody and extension of the friendship that Moose and Squirrel had for each other. While it may rile up some of my fellow fans, it does not take much imagination to picture Rocky and Bullwinkle as a gay couple; but if they care about each other that much, then it shouldn’t matter.
I took it a step further by just addressing what I had always thought: that Rocky was a female squirrel, even though he went by the gender of male. Since Caribou and Meese are closely related by species, I thought that palette-swapping the two, and making Wilscott smarter, would be enough to throw off suspicion; but as I am making this confession here and now, it makes little difference.
Rocky and Bullwinkle was a great show, not immune from criticism and scrutiny for the racist depictions of other cultures that the entire cartoon industry was guilty of at the time. To keep the spirits of June Foray, Bill Scott, and Bill Conrad alive, I created Wilscott and Juniper, and made their friend Stratocaster Hopper similar in appearance to Gidney the Moon-man (mustachioed one without a scrooch gun around his waist). Only in a place of magic would characters of mine be similar to cartoon characters and get away with being able to talk and understand human speech in the type of genre my Mythos stories center around.
