During the time that Serena and her brother Spencer had to live in Jefferson City after their parents died, Serena had all but given up trying to make new friends. The first day she went to Wingerton Elementary, Ruby went up to Serena at recess on the swings. Ruby had seen how sad Rini was, and thought at the very least she should try to cheer up a fellow Jones. After a scuffle that nearly got Serena suspended from school, Ruby pledged her undying friendship and loyalty to the sad and broken Serena. From that moment on, Ruby was a welcome fixture in the home of Esther and Jillian Jones. Serena kept in touch with her friends in Remington from afar, but did not want anyone to replace Ruby in Jefferson. Serena never wanted another friend, and Ruby benefited from Serena’s constant presence in her life. Ruby’s brothers and sister were too far apart in age to have much in common with her, so Esther and Jillian made her into an honorary niece (neither side realizing there was a familial connection).

As Serena’s budding fashionista traits began to blossom, Ruby pitched in by being her mannequin, model, and fellow supply-runner. It was more than just a friend doing a favor for another, Ruby was genuinely blown away by Rini’s and Magda’s creations (see photo above). With the good came the bad throughout the years, as Serena and Ruby were both targeted by haters (Serena being Jewish in a lesbian household and Ruby being black “trying to act like a white girl”, according to other students) Ruby always turned the other cheek and ignored their bullies when there was no physical altercation, but Rini was not as forgiving. Ruby served as the hotheaded Serena’s voice of reason, saying that there would always be haters and bullies, and that Serena was too good to stoop down to their world. Oftentimes, this advice failed, but eventually Serena learned to curb her temper better. Ruby’s status as honorary member of their family allowed her to be privy to Esther Jones’ true power as a Knight of Pan, vowing to keep it forever a secret.

Following the events of Darkfyre Souls, Ruby was made an emissary to the Petaliaverse when her desire to help others manifested when Tetrazin Sol and Stratocaster Hopper decided to help earth-based slvskorte and Neverscapian creatures who were also dysphoric of their own toxins or powers. One of the reasons was Eternia, her slvskorte, possessed a dangerous power that could make others sick at will, fearing that she could never be loved or deserved to be. Ruby, just like the other Joneses she has a strong bond with, vowed to Eternia that she would never turn away from her.
