Who is the real Wanda Wasp?

Wanda Wasp never existed. She was a fiction crafted for a mission, an identity built from forged records, manufactured history, and years of careful preparation. To the Empire, she was a daughter of Graiskalle and a loyal subject of Empress Slugly. In reality, every aspect of her public life had been designed to conceal the truth. The disguise was so convincing that even those who prided themselves on suspicion accepted it without question. By the time Wanda entered the Empire, the lie had become more believable than the woman behind it.

If she is not a Wasp, who was she?

In the Neverhive, Wanda was born Bebe Trueworth to Dr. Ayzaiah Brainard and Bentina Trueworth, and was raised in the lap of luxury because of her ties to the royal family that only a select few knew. For most of her life, Bebe was shrouded from the truth so that she could grow up to be humble and learn to fend for herself when all else fails. From her early years to the present, Bebe aspired to serve her Hive and Country like her grandfather did as a General in the Wasp-Hornet War.

What is her true connection to the Neverhive Royal Family?

Bebe’s connection to the Neverhive Royal Family was hidden for most of her life. The secret began with her father, Dr. Ayzaiah Brainard, who discovered by accident that his closest friend and wartime mentor, Earl Boston Bee, was actually his biological father. The revelation transformed Brainard’s understanding of his own place in the kingdom and quietly tied Bebe to one of the most influential families in the Neverhive. To protect both families from scandal and political complications, knowledge of the connection remained limited to a trusted few.

Through Earl Boston Bee, Bebe became a relative of Queen Beatrix, Countess Belinda, and Duke Benjamin Bee. Additional family connections on her mother’s side further strengthened those ties, making Bebe far more closely connected to the royal household than most citizens ever realized.

Why the disguise? Why the name change?

After the death of Belinda’s combinoft, Count Burton Vee, Belinda answered a greater call where she could be of humanitarian help to the war-torn world of the Wasp Empire. Bebe resigned her public commission as an NSF agent and her record was expunged so that she could go with Belinda, posing as her handmaid and body-double. Belinda married a wasp named Walter, a paper-factory drone and had a second family. Bebe stayed in the shadows as she prepared her cover story should the worst happen to Belinda. Nearly 13 years after Belinda hatched her twin girls, Whitney and Winona, she gave birth to three more children before she fell ill and died. Enter Wanda Wasp, the stepmother.

As Wanda, she doted on the youngest three of her stepchildren, but little by little Wanda became colder, aloof, and harsh with the twins. Winona retreated into herself and would look at pictures of her mother in the darkness of her closet, while Whitney coped with having a stepmother by roughhousing more than she normally did at school. Wanda could not completely suppress her true heart when it came to her Cousin Winona, and there were many times when Bebe nearly tripped over her tongue. It had to be done, though. Wanda wanted Winona out of the house and out of the Empire, and she played the role of wicked stepmother to near perfection. Winona was later arrested by Slugly’s shock troopers and exiled from the wasp hive to die in the cold. It was time for phase II.

Why did Wanda not love Winona?

“Wanda” did not love Winona, but Bebe did with all her heart, and she had made a deathbed promise to Belinda that she and Walter would safeguard and protect all of her kids from Slugly’s evil reach, but she could not do it alone. Whitney broke curfew right after the shock troops dropped Winona off into the snowy chill of the outside island. Without hesitation, Whitney escaped from the hive and came to Winona’s rescue with warm blankets and enough of an incentive to reach out into the ether to the two Neverhivians who could help Winona now, Belinda’s eldest daughters Billie and Babs.

Whitney entrusted their sisters with Winona and finally got the hug from her big sisters she never realized she wanted or needed as badly as she did. Whitney snuck back into the Wasp Hive, and the next morning Whitney told her stepmother that she was home all night. When Wanda sent little Wendy downstairs to breakfast, Wanda dropped the act and addressed her little cousin as her true self, Bebe; grateful beyond measure that Whitney pulled it off and did not raise any suspicion. Winona was now in safe hands with their Aunt, Queen Beeatrix and her daughters.

Why the subterfuge? What was the danger?

As long as Belinda’s children were in the Wasp Hive, they could not escape the dimension itself, or from Slugly’s cruelty. She saw any Neverhivian royals in her realm as a mortal threat to her rule. Walter was not just a paper factory worker, he was a deputized agent of the NSF’s secret underground, trained under Count Burton as his hand-picked successor in the event of his death or disappearance. Bebe and Walter worked in concert with Whitney to use Slugly’s own agenda to their advantage, but they each had to play their part.

• Whitney:
  • She was to act rebellious and disgruntled toward her father and gorgon stepmother, further casting the illusion that Whitney was just a normal wasp with a chip on her shoulder, seemingly rejecting her own bloodline as a Neverhivian.
• Wanda/Bebe:
  • Using her gold-level acting skills, Bebe built up her Wanda facade over time, gradually becoming more selfish and intolerant, and she had to wear grey makeup to resemble a female wasp from the northern ghetto. Her job was to put her actual love for Belinda’s daughters — her own cousins — to the side and metaphorically shred it. Winona was singled out and made the family scapegoat so that the only sibling who still wanted to connect with her was toddler Wendy, who was too young to retain any memory of the twins.
• Walter:
  • Walter was to play the role of the bumbling, scheming, and hair-triggered rage-junkie who hated his job and wanted to be free of his family to have an ale after work. When he was unable to truly hide his fatherly love for Winona, it was up to Wanda and Whitney to provoke the situation. Walter was to also report the project’s progress to his and Burton’s mentor, Chancellor Quinten Quilliosa, who was in exile.
• Winona:
  • Winona’s job was the easiest, mainly because she believed that her family stopped loving her and would not hesitate to turn her in to Slugly for a reward. She, her brothers, and Wendy were all kept in the dark about the true danger being the children of a Neverhivian Countess was in the dystopian hellhole that Belinda believed was worth saving. Winona was taken in by Queen Beeatrix and given her rightful title as a fellow viscountess, like her sisters. As of right now, the final phase of the plan is in the works. Whitney will be sent away to the Neverhive and documents will be fudged so that on Warote, Walker, and Wendy’s birth certificate.
