Personality Traits
For most of his life, Jargon was misunderstood by outsiders, and his brothers went to great lengths to provide support for him, and so that their parents could also provide it as well. Considerably younger than his brothers, Jargon spent a lot of time by himself and never realized what social boundaries there were that he could not even see. His teachers, the few friends he had, and other Neverbeings took his words and actions at face-value, believing that he was either much slower than other kids or that he was just lazy and did not have any ambition. Sadly, this held true when, some time later, when Edmund and their dear friend Soprana took the oath of combination and had kids. Jargon did not know how to relate to children, and his oddity tested the patience of his nephew and neice, acting socially out of place when he did not mean to.
Relationships:
Wilhelm and Dextra: Soprana’s elder sister and her combinoft were inarguably the safest harbor for Jargon, as they had gotten to know him when he was growing up, and Dextra was the epitome of patience and guidance, and was often the shoulder that Jargon found himself relying upon when he could not even speak with his own brothers about his troubles. Wilhelm’s encouragment was more constructive than Dextra’s: when he would work on movie sets, Wil never let an opportunity go by without offering the young Jargon to help out (sets, props, sound effects, and even the occasional background role; which is how Jargon got his “Archie” jacket). While he never wanted Dextra to do this for him, she had once spoken with Strat (now a teenager) about how he had misunderstood the differences his uncle possessed. Strat’s behavior did not change right away, but those words shone a different light on Jargon when he would subsequently see him.
Celia the Spider: Like with her mother, Celia has no blood connection to Jargon, sans baby Zimri, but saw Jargon as family even before he and Churro fell in love. Celia was more of a kindred spirit than a mentor (which she also inadvertently was). Her physical disability of a congenital heart defect and his disability of Earthean Behavior Disorder Class-AS was a link they used to forge a friendship. Not one for excitement, Celia found other ways to hang out with Jargon; puzzles, movies, card games; stuff that allowed Jargon to be in an environment where his oddities did not matter. Years later, when Jargon learned that Churro was pregnant, he was scared out of his wits, but Celia was an old-hand in rearing her cousins, just like Jargon had been for Arthur. Her words did not need to be spoken out loud for him to be made to believe that he truly is a good father.
Edmund and Duluth: One was an explorer, the other was a teacher and wine-taster; both were far older than their little brother by at least a decade each. They were not around that much, but when they visited, they made every last second with Jargon count. They never told him to his face how much they loved him, or how proud of him they truly were; but it was all true, and their mother and Soprana each assured him that those were their genuine feelings for him. A lot of his odd behavior can be attributed to being without his brothers and the shock of losing Duluth not long before Edmund. Jargon always visits their memorial stones on Tiger’s Rock and helps the Nevertribe maintain the markers and the grass surrounding them.
Soprana: Jargon and Churro are deeply in love, mirroring the relationship that she had with Edmund, but in differing ways. In the two years after Edmund’s death, Churro had run across Jargon, clear out of the blue, while she was touring through the Myriad as a singer. By this point, Jargon had been drifting through the Neverzones, having no one else to come home to. Churro was tired of traveling with an entourage without someone she could trust and open up to, so she convinced Jargon to come with her on the tour. It was only a matter of time before Churro could sense that he was lovestruck, and that he felt terrible about it; not wanting to even entertain the thought of stealing the heart of who was once Edmund’s Combinoft. Churro began to grapple with those same kind of emotions, herself; fearing that her returning his affections would be a betrayal to Edmund’s memory. They finally admitted their feelings to each other, but it did not make things any easier; not at first. The more he traveled with her and heard her beautiful voice, the more he began to shed his doubts. She was a Neverdecade older than him; the mother of his niece and nephews; and apart from their love and his appreciation for her craft, so little did they have in common, but when they were with each other, they felt complete. The fact that he passed the Heart-fire test during their combinoft ritual spoke volumes. He does not attempt to act like an alpha, but Churro does not treat him any differently than if he were older than her. It is an equal partnership, and they both share a bond.
Arthur: Being only a larvae when Edmund died, Arthur had no idea who his father was, so when Churro and Jargon returned to their Neverzone, Arthur had no problem accepting him as his father. Jargon would file with the Nevertribe to allow him to adopt Arthur as his son; he only did this with him because Cello and Strat already had a father, and he did not want to force himself on them so as to make them feel like they were abandoning Edmund. When Arthur was old enough, he was told who Jargon biologically was to him, and that Jargon’s brother was his father. It did not shatter Arthur’s world in the way that Jargon and Churro feared that it could. If anything, Arthur saw the parallel between him and Uncle Jargon; that they were the youngest of their siblings by a thick margin, and Jargon was always there for Arthur in ways that Edmund and Duluth were unable to be for him. This would all come to head when Churro gave big news.
Zimri: The light of Churro and Jargon’s lives, the little bowed infant, always swaddled in a cute little blankie, is not only a gift to the world, but to Jargon as well. Arthur had spent the 9 months that Churro was pregnant helping Jargon get past his fears, teaching him what to do and where to go when he was unable to find the answers he needed, and Arthur adored his baby sister, just as much as Strat, Tetra, Cello, and Laddie. Zimri was indirectly responsible for healing Magnolia the Snow Owl’s avian flu, and positive vibes always seemed to occur when Jargon held Zimri in his arms. Barely a Neveryear old, and she is already a daddy’s girl.
Laddie DeScorch: Nowadays, they get along, but Laddie had the least patience towards the immature and opportunistic side of Jargon that he always thought he had seen. Kid or not, Jargon was always rebuffed by Laddie, not wanting to be mixed up in the mayhem that could have ensued from a mixed-up kid like him. The reason Jargon kept this to himself was that he would never have imagined Laddie falling in love with his niece Cello. Matter of fact, when Laddie welcomed Churro back after the two years she was gone, Churro berated Cello and Laddie for being in a very inappropriate age-gapped relationship (forgetting that Cello was of legal age). Not wanting to make things worse, the only thing that Jargon could do was caress Churro’s hair and not make a sound; which was not at all what Laddie expected. After Churro and Celia helped the former reach an understanding about Cello’s relationship, Laddie met with Celia to confess his misapprehensions of Jargon, seeing how Celia and Jargon were good friends. Celia felt that Laddie was too hard on both Jargon and himself. It was a clean slate, and they were off to a good start; so, little by little, Laddie got to know his younger uncle v’combin, and he finally saw what everyone else did; that Jargon was devoted to those he cared about, and it now included Laddie.
Tina Tortoise and Charlotte Chameleon: Arthur’s girlfriend and gal pal both look up to Jargon, each believing that he is no different than any other adult in the ways that count. Tina is extremely meek and shy, so she seldom has anything to say to Jargon when they are around, but she does reciprocate when Jargon tries to relate to her, seeing as how she and his adoptive son are in love. Charlotte, on the other hand, is fascinated by the things that make Jargon unique: random mind and memory recall, unusual art talents, and knowing things about culture that are long before his time. It could be that Charlotte sees that Jargon is just another kind soul who has his own toxin to deal with, and that she always wears her proverbial helmet of ToxAnon ally at all times. Charlotte can be just as much of a chatterbox as Jargon, and they effortlessly are able to hold conversations for hours on end and not get tired of it.
Strat: Having the least amount of years separating them, Strat was not fond of his juvenile uncle, and often would act coldly around him, or being disingenuously polite towards him. All of that changed after the conversation Strat would have with Celia when they learned that the widowed Churro had tied the knot with Jargon. Strat took a shine to him after this; also aided by girlfriend Tetrazin’s powers of empathy that surpassed the other Neverbeings of the island. Tetra could see the kind heart that the awkward Jargon possessed, and now so did Strat. Strat was humbled when Jargon gave him the reasons why he felt he should not attempt to adopt him and Cello like he did with Arthur. Jargon confessed that Edmund and Duluth were like idols to him, and that he silently swore that he would be a good uncle to their kids. Years later, it was Jargon’s endorsement of Tetra and Strat that convinced Churro to appoint them as Zimri’s godparents.
Cello: Of all of the children, Cello was the most difficult to establish a relationship with during all the stages of her early life. She thought that her uncle was a mooch and a wierdo, not wanting to be near him at family functions. She would not find out how terribly this hurt him until many years later, after she became a mother to Petalia. Moving past her gothic phase after losing her precious mentors and her father meant that there were several barriers that Cello still had up, and the hypocrisy of Churro believing the age gap between Cello and Laddie as Combinofts, when in reality she was not that close in age to Jargon either. Jargon would continue to keep his distance, but Cello’s empathic powers grew more and more each day because of her bond to Petalia and Magnolia. She did not have a long heart-to-heart with her uncle, but she did apologize for her petulance and for not giving him a chance. Her hug said more to Jargon than her words did; that she was happy for her mother and him, and that Arthur was coming into his own all the more because of the fatherly love that Jargon bestowed upon him. Nowadays, if someone were to make a stray remark about how odd Jargon Guntherskite Hopper is, Cello has but to play one single sharp high-note within earshot of the instigator, teaching them a lesson in humility that they will never forget; just like how Cello will never forget how Jargon has stepped up for their family in the wake of Edmund’s passing.
