Early life
Rafe was the second-born child of Linda and Neil Heyward, given the name Rachel at birth. While born in the states, their family lived in Neil’s hometown of Evora Portugal when his mother was dying. Rachel was a typical little girl as a toddler, but after returning to the United States, resettling in Remington Springs, Missouri, Rachel had decided that everything about what she felt and thought about herself was wrong. She had little interest in girly things; which can be said of a lot of little girls, but it went deeper than sheer tomboyish-ness; the feelings of inadequacy and self-hatred made her realize that she was never meant to be a girl, and decided that her life was a lie. At age 6, Rachel began cutting her hair and mutilated all her dresses with scissors. She eventually revealed that she was no longer answering to “Rachel” and was no longer a girl — the name was Rafe and she was a he, plain and simple. This was at first thought to be a phase by the parents, but Rafe never backed down, and his self-destructive behavior began to escalate.
Neil and Linda disagreed almost immediately about how to handle the situation, and Rafe’s relationship with Neil became toxic. Feeling that they were going to eventually turn on him anyway, Rafe decided that he would stop loving his father and sister before they ever had the chance. One night, Rafe got into the most heated argument with Neil yet; screaming at the top of his lungs and throwing things. Neil washed his hands of Rachel and had Mindy move out with him. Linda tried to humor Rafe, but still approached it as a phase. Rafe gave up wanting to fight and decided to take himself out of the equation. While at a friend’s house for a sleepover, Rafe snuck out of his sleeping bag and stacked chairs in the kitchen to the cabinet where the mother had put their red icing — Rafe’s allergen. Before Rafe could open the cabinet, the chairs fell beneath him, and Rafe hit his head on the counter.
The next week was spent treating the comatose Rafe at AbGen. Mindy visited Rafe every night, reading to him his favorite book “Strega Nona”. Mindy’s grief over nearly losing Rachel finally made her realize that this was who her sister was — her brother. Mindy moved back in with Linda, and Neil went out west, only sending cards at birthdays and Christmas from that point. Rafe finally started to be happier, but still never smiled or was enthusiastic about anything until he began playing soccer. In the meantime, Linda began researching transition procedures, setting up a clandestine meeting with a foundation called SSF. When Rafe was 8, he transferred back to public school after attempting private school for first and second grade.
Panfan Pivot
A few weeks after school started, word of Rafe’s soccer talent began to leak out, along with the rumor that he was a she. This was a litmus test that showed Rafe who his true friends would be. He had heard a rumor that a former friend of his, turned bully, was socked in the face by a redhead with black gloves for insulting a heavyset girl she was friends with; and this would all come to head when Rafe started to outwardly display his soccer moves at recess, attracting the attention of both the redhead and her friend. The three of them met face-to-face, and everything he head about them was true, so he offered his friendship to the two girls — Nicole and Gwendy, who were both smitten with him. Nicole’s reaction to her feelings for him was of sheer panic, but she kept this to herself, that, and the fact that she was also crushing on Gwendy as well.
It did not take long for Rafe to be accepted into the rest of the group, particularly Nicole’s cousins Magda and Serena. Gwendy and Nicole spent their recesses and weekends with Rafe, becoming an inseparable trio. During the winter, a blizzard left the three children in the care of Rafe’s mother Linda, and the three of them came up with a cipher language in which they could write notes in class and mail, using a book that talked about Nordic conqueror history, which contained a set of runes which they created their code from. In early spring, Nicole had begun acting weird, more withdrawn. She had asked their teacher to move her seat away from Gwendy, and stopped talking to Gwendy altogether. Rafe was insistent on trying to salvage their friendship, but Magda said that it was not their place. Rafe picked up the slack and spent all of his free time with Gwendy, for the little bit of time she had left before she and her mother moved away from Remington. Gwendy confessed to Rafe that she was attracted to this kid on the soccer team, and wanted to give that person a kiss. When Rafe asked who, she pulled Rafe in for a kiss for all the cafeteria to see. They had one last night of fun before Gwendy and Olivia moved.
Relations with Nicole
After Gwendy moved, Rafe was determined to find out why Nicole was so cold with Gwendy for those last few weeks, and when he went to confront her about it, she had vanished. It was her birthday, and like the year prior, Nicole ran away from home and hid. The day after, Nicole had shown up back in her bed again. Rafe saw that Nicole had to have been desperate to resort to such measures, and went about things a different way. He saw how much pain Nicole was in, and he tried to comfort her. When they were about to hold hands, Nicole’s Uncle Randy came into the room with big news, that the doctors who were treating her sisters Bella and Ariella, had administered a special therapy that would possibly wake them up from their comas. Nicole was terrified to go, she was worried that they would never wake up again. At Rafe’s suggestion, Nicole brought a copy of her favorite book, Peter Pan, to read to them in the hopes that they would respond to familiar words.
Rafe visited Nic the next day at her Uncle’s, but Randy told Rafe that Nicole was moving back in with her father and sisters; they had come back! Nicole was over the moon, but she was still depressed. When Rafe caught up with her, Nicole admitted that she was scared that her sisters were likely prone to relapse, and she cried on Rafe’s shoulder. Rafe hugged her, and saw that Nicole’s face was beet red; there was more to her story than this. A few days later, Nicole finally admitted that she was only telling part of the truth, but now she was not afraid anymore. What had freaked Nicole out was that she viewed her feelings for both Gwendy and Rafe to be taboo, and that she was a freak. Thanks to Ariella and Bella, and especially her father, Nicole came out as bi to Rafe, and asked if they could explore their feelings for the other in greater depth at a later date. Rafe was content to say yes.
Trouble at Camp Hawthorne
Summer came around, and Nicole was despondent that her sisters were going to sleepaway camp as a counselor and camper, just like Magda and Serena’s brothers. Rini and Magda pleaded with Rafe to work his charm on Nicole, convincing Robert to let her enroll at soccer camp with him. The ploy worked for a few weeks, but when word was sent via fax in their secret code that Ariella was being bullied and that the bullies were drug mules. Robert and Dennis Briscoe took a bus to the Ozarks to aid the local police department, but hit a snag when it was revealed that Rafe, Rini, Nicole, and Magda had stowed away on the bus to lend their aid as well. With no way out, the kids joined Robert, on the condition that they followed his orders to the tee.
While Briscoe checked in with the FBI, Robert and the kids went to Hawthorne to confer with Bella and Sophie. The tires were shot out near the entrance to the camp’s outer grounds, and everyone but Rini was taken at gunpoint to a remote area of the camp called Misty Cove. In the scuffle before this, Rafe scrawled a message on the dirty window of the rental car, hoping that Rini would intercept it. Rafe and the others were tied up and held by the two culprits, Anna Rexia and Lacey Slitherton when the boss of the drug ring showed himself: Blowtop Jones, the deranged uncle of Robert’s wife Rebecca. Rafe had a front row seat for the ensuing battle between Ariella, Bella, Spencer, Serena, and their aunt Esther Jones (Rebecca’s baby sister) against him and his cronies. Ariella tricked Blowtop into drinking a bottle of water laced with his own product. Linda and the other parents drove to Hawthorne to pick up their kids after Blowtop was neutralized. Because Rafe was scheduled to have experimental surgery done for transition, Linda allowed Mindy (who was in Bella and AJ’s cabin) to feign being sick, and took them both back to Remington while the other girls stayed with Bella and Ariella.
Post-Op adolescence
After weeks of surgical procedures and recovery, Rafe had taken his first steps as an anatomically-correct boy, with hormone treatments to follow in his early teens. Mindy distanced herself from Rafe, but Nicole was there waiting for him when he finally came home. From that moment on, Rafe and Nicole grew closer and closer; by 5th grade, they were officially dating. Rafe was basically a fixture in the Jones household, and Nicole’s sisters came to embrace Rafe like a little brother. One night, when Nicole was sick with the flu, Rafe was at her bedside, but Ariella forbade Rafe to stay in there all night because she was afraid Rafe would catch it. Ariella asked him about how Mindy was, but this had a negative reaction from him. Her Pan powers could not detect how deep his hatred for Mindy went, and when Rafe asked why it mattered to her, Ariella said that Mindy was a good friend of hers at one time. Rafe misconstrued this as Mindy having betrayed Ariella just like she did him, and this fueled his anger at her.
In 8th grade, Rafe’s relationship with Nicole began to change, she began to become the same social butterfly that her sisters were at the same time that Rafe grew more distant and quiet. Nicole also became bulimic, putting her at odds with him. This made them realize that it might be time to end their romance on a positive note and remain best friends. Rafe tried to hide it, but Nicole could see that he felt that he was weighing Nicole down. She swore to him that this was not the case, and they were still the best of each other. It was around this time that Rafe was finally prescribed the hormone treatments, but he still could not stand what he saw when he looked in the mirror.
Blue Gene Baby (Sister), onward
Present day, sophomore year at RHS; One of the biggest assignments that science teacher, Mr. Eggerstein, assigns is an option for extra credit of mass proportions; an Ancestry DNA project. Nicole, despite being the smartest kid in school and an A+ student, volunteers to do the project along with cousin Magda as a sign of their unity. Rafe notices that something is off with Nicole, that her chipper attitude is turning frosty. Dealing with his own problems with fellow student Twi Lan, twin sister of Rafe’s best friend Jim Marsden, Nicole assures him that nothing is wrong. Later that night, at soccer practice, Rafe was shocked to see Serena and Spencer Jones back in Remington. The Jones siblings begged Rafe in helping find Nicole, who vanished from her house and is on the verge of attempted suicide. Rafe went AWOL from practice and helped them trace Nicole’s steps.
The entire Jones clan finally learns where Nicole is and finds her in a stasis field, made from AJ’s Pan Magic, and is at Rebecca Jones’s grave with an empty bottle of alprazolam in her hands. Rafe was so terrified, he couldn’t speak. Bella answered the question that he was too traumatized to ask: Nicole’s suppressed dark side took her over when she learned from the DNA test that Rebecca wasn’t her blood mother — that Esther Jones, their aunt, was. Rafe backed away into he darker patches of Welkerblanc Cemetery, and begged God to spare Nicole; to save her and AJ. Suddenly, Esther and a very-stabbed AJ appeared from Nicole’s mindscape as Nicole began to wake up. The pills she took were vaporized, and Nicole’s dark personality was destroyed, by none other than Nicole herself.
Rafe went with Rini and Spencer to meet up with the others at AbGen while Nicole was sent to the rehab ward for observation and Ariella was being sutured up by Drs. Zundel and Moonshine with Nurse O’Copper keeping watch. Rafe went down to the gift shop on the first floor and scoured the whole place for something to lift Nicole’s spirits back up. Almost as if by magic, Rafe saw the prettiest, loveliest bouquet of tiger lilies. When he brought them up to the counter, he remembered that he left his wallet at the school. Serena had tailed Rafe and saw the whole thing; he asked the girl at the counter if he could pay for them tomorrow when he got his card back, or if he could work out an arrangement of some kind; that he would do anything. The lady at the counter asked why this was so important to him, and who the patient was, he broke down in tears and said, “the girl who gave me back my smile when the sun died.” The lady at the counter smiled at Rafe and said that it was payment enough. Rafe ran out of there so fast, he didn’t see Rini was peering in from the outside of the shop. Rini went in and said, “Gramma Aurora?” The lady smiled and said, “As far as you know, this never happened and I was never here, Sabertop.” She then blew a kiss at Rini and vanished as the real clerk came in from the stockroom.
The next day at the Jones house, Rafe came by to check for himself that Nicole was safe and ready to take the long road to recovery. She let on that she knew that he snuck into her hospital room while she was sleeping, with the flowers. The happy moment didn’t last when Nicole’s self-hatred began to take hold of her again. She recounted to Rafe how her alter, Elocin, physically assaulted Bella and called Ariella an incestuous tramp as she revealed that Jesse and Sophie were distantly their cousins, out of spite. Rafe tried to convince Nicole that none of this was her fault and that she was a victim, but Nicole wanted nothing from Rafe other than the spite and anger that was due her. Their thoughts turned to Gwendy as they began to look through their 3rd Grade yearbook.
Twi vs. Rafe: Road to Gwendy
Following Nicole’s traumatic near-death experience, all of her family friends were shaken up about what must have been going through. Naturally, each of the individuals tried to find ways to help Nicole cope, and to find ways of coping with it, themselves. Rafe’s best friend, James Hu-Marsden, and his twin sister were vying for Nicole’s love, convinced that love was the only true cure for Nicole’s pain. Rafe knew about Jim’s crush on Nic, but when he was told about Twi’s entering her hat in the ring, it twisted Rafe’s insides. In the weeks that followed, the snippy and tepid relationship between Twi and Rafe had shifted; Rafe took every opportunity and means to vent his anger and ire at Twi when Nicole wasn’t around. They exchanged insults; called each other names, and was just shy of escalating to physical altercations.
On the night of Nicole’s birthday, Twi and Jim each awaited Nicole’s decision about who she would choose as her true love (yes, it was that deep). Nicole was heartbroken by the heavy burden that this placed on her shoulders. To Rafe’s, and everyone else’s, surprise, Jim bowed out of the running, giving his blessing for both Nic and his sister to be happy. Jim would learn, not ten minutes later, that Serena still carried the secret torch for Jim that she always had, and that she loved him. Rafe was happy for Jim and Serena, but was torn apart by Nic and Twi’s bond solidifying. Rafe would grow more withdrawn and irate; which nearly led to a fistfight in the hallways at school while they were running errands for their teachers. Rafe, following this, went into the bathroom and quietly sobbed the words “Why won’t she give me a chance?” Unbeknownst to Rafe, Twi heard this. Right after the arrival of Lexi Jonescart to RHS, any possible conflict with Twi was circumvented by Lexi providing Rafe with distractions.
A month later, the Jones Families and their friends were getting ready for Halloween at Robert’s house, a tradition that Magda, as Twi and Jim’s best friend, was a frequent participant of: the Halloweenie Roast. Sitting out Halloween and choosing to just stay in for the day, Rafe was suprised to recieve a visit from Ariella, Esther, and Twi; bearing a note written in Nordic Runes. After averting a heated exchange between Rafe and Twi, Esther and Ariella decided it was time to reveal what Rafe was truly hiding. Using their Pan Powers, they bridged Rafe’s true emotions with Twi’s mind; finally, it had clicked. Rafe was harboring a crush on Twi for about three years, and picking fights was a way to decompress and vent his emotions. Rafe vehemently denied this, but the dam had burst. Twi mended fences with Rafe and swore that, even if it was not the way he would have wanted, she would love him as a friend; a bestie. With their spirits balanced, they revealed the true reason for their visit by having Rafe read the rune ciphers; it was a ransom note from the same kidnapper who trapped Serena in the Catacombs. The pattern in the bottom corner of the parchment was the only thing that Rafe could not make out; and a familiar quirk of the handwriting stuck out to him that reminded him of Gwendy, who was also familiar with the cipher. Having pointed Twi, Ariella and Esther in Gwendy’s direction so as to find out about the last component of the kidnapper’s note, Rafe pleaded to join them in rescuing Nicole. With the condition that he stay out of sight until they said so, Rafe teleported with them to Steelsville.
Birth of Team Panfan
With Gwendy’s help, the cipher was translated into a set of dimensional coordinates, leading to the possibility of finding Nicole in one of the Great Myriad’s unaffiliated Neverzones. Rafe and the others met up with Bella, Kiki, and Ferrina J. Ferrette at Cullen Lake, the place where they were going to conduct their search through the dimensional gateways, via the Nevertomes. Nearly a half-hour of scanning the Great Myriad, remotely, seemed to be going nowhere, until they tried looking for the Neverzone whose coordinates were the same number, backwards. Ariella and Esther detected a faint flicker of Royal-grade Pixie Dust, the kind that only the Knights of Pan and their slvskorn would have. It was the right Neverzone, and further proven when Ariella Pansported Becky from deep within the pocket dimension, revealing that Nicole was being held captive on a pirate ship, whose owner and captain had sought out Nicole for her healing powers. Like a shot, the group transported from Cullen Lake to the Dark Neverzone.
